Why Elder Law?

These days, an “older” American is typically defined as one who is sixty-five and older.

Baby Boomers—those born between 1945 and 1964—have been the largest demographic cohort in U.S. history. And, now more and more “boomers” are reaching this elder milestone every day. With the continued growth of the elder population, elder law is emerging as an extremely vital legal area.

The needs of the elder population evolve as people are living longer and are having more active lives. It is foolish to define this population as old people, sitting in rocking chairs, waiting to die. Of course, not everyone has the same needs. Some are living independently and many even continue to work. Others require assisted living or nursing care. Whatever the situation, there is a huge need for legal advice and protections.

Our Elder Law attorneys specialize in how to best use our knowledge to fit the needs of senior clients and their families.

What is Elder Law?

The primary focuses of elder care law include, but are not limited to:

  • Medicare/Medicaid
  • Social Security
  • Retirement
  • Guardianship
  • Estate Planning
  • Continuum of Care—from independent to assisted living to nursing care, including home care
  • Elder abuse

As attorneys, we handle important financial and estate planning matters, as well as taking care of day-to-day issues affecting the care of seniors, such as assisted living and life planning.

At times, although not typically categorized as elder care, it also includes family matters, such as grandparent visitation and even divorce as these issues are becoming more prominent in the elder population. And, though not necessarily legal issues, our attorneys often handle the more sensitive emotional and physical needs of older or disabled adults.

We are advocates for the elderly and their loved ones.

What we do for clients needing Elder Law services?

As you can imagine, our clients have a host of various needs. To meet these, we focus on the specific legal needs of seniors. Working directly with the elderly client or family members, we utilize a variety of legal tools that are specifically designed to meet their stated goals and objectives. Our approach takes into consideration financial needs, well-being, health and long-term care, as well as quality of life.

There are many times our Elder Law staff goes beyond what would traditionally be considered legal matters, and help clients with real life problems, taking into account the physical and mental challenging that often accompany the aging process. Our staff extends beyond lawyers, to include a network of social workers and other trustworthy elder care professionals who provide assistance to our clients.
